Chapter Eighteen

Meeting with the Lord of Club Inferno

A part of me wanted to blast Solomon as he descended and try to upload the Black Ice program directly into him. Unfortunately, that wouldn’t work. As advanced and dangerous as Snake’s program was, it couldn’t just automatically rip through every firewall and security feed. It could do most, but I’d need to directly link to Solomon’s infospace. That would require us either to link up in a private chat or directly share information that was intimate and usually used for sex. I was trained to kill someone during sex—don’t ask how—but it wasn’t something I wanted to do if I didn’t have to. No matter how much I was making on this job.

There was also something about Solomon that caused me to pause. Despite looking like a guy that you’d meet on the street versus all the enhanced avatars we’d passed before, there was a glow about him that made me want to listen to him. I had to mentally link to Googleplex and download all the atrocities he’d supposedly committed with Blipvert. The coverage of the local news still followed the old adage, “If it bleeds, it leads” and the murders were described in sickening detail. Solomon Jones had used his stupid software to kill over a hundred people—closer to two hundred really—and had promised to do many more.

There, that helped clear my head. There were few things that pissed me off more than self-deluded jackasses who killed lots of people for no other reason than they were in the way. Part of what kept me from being the assassin I was was because I no longer viewed killing as an impersonal act. Snake had always taught me to keep a professional distance between myself and the murders. “It’s just business” and other platitudes. Well, frick that. Life and death were very personal to everyone who had it decided for them. It made killing this jackass, assuming I could pull it off, easy.

Solomon opened with a speech as he descended the stairs, acting like we were in a movie. “Infospace is the battlefield of the war for the future. In the Eighties, my older brother was all about how there was no future. Well, here we are. The War on Terror and the War on Drugs were a prelude to the War on Everything. There are no more tanks across Belgium or air raids on London. Governments don’t go to war with each other now. No, instead, the corporations war on each other, but they don’t want to destroy anything valuable—just people. They steal information, tech, tools, and do a little bit of sabotage from burned hard drives to massacres. Not just against rival corporations but rival execs too. The execs need their bio-mods, drugs, untraceable cash, and stolen toys just like everyone else. The Invisible Hand is the ruler of the society that Big Brother, Supply Side Jesus, and the average American voter created.”

Knowing that I did feel awed by his presence, I wonder if Blipvert was being used right now.
